Irene may not have been as fierce as some experts warned, but it has done between $7 billion and $20 billion in damage, nonetheless, including record flooding in Vermont.

Here's a simple rule-of-thumb on how to file an insurance claim if your property has been damaged: Document, contact, follow. Document the damage with photos and video. Contact your insurance company and carefully follow the directions of the adjustor.
